Celebrating International Women's Day

Women from the Brazilian Amazon learn to use geospatial tools to protect the forest and improve agroforestry production.

The SERVIR regional hubs around the world celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2023. In case you missed the events, tweets, and other posts, here is a round up of highlights:

SERVIR Amazonia

SERVIR Amazonia shared how women in the Brazilian Amazon are learning to use geospatial tools to protect the forest. Local small producers have been trained on using the TerraOnTrack app to help them monitor land changes. This training will be continued by Imaflora, SERVIR Amazonia local partner in Brazil.

SERVIR Eastern and Southern Africa

SERVIR Eastern and Southern Africa highlighted on Twitter their work using earth observation data to develop index-based agricultural insurance products that address gender priorities to increase women’s resilience to climate shock & enhance food security. RCMRD also published a story highlighting some of the women in earth observation who have benefited from their work and the efforts to use innovation and technology for gender equality.

 

 

 

 


SERVIR HKH

SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya was featured in a blog and tweets by ICIMOD for their work Empowering Women in GIT. In his blog for International Women’s Day, Director General of ICIMOD Pema Gyamtsho noted, “At the programmatic level, we continue to address the STEM gender gap through our training on women in geospatial information technology (GIT) under our SERVIR HKH regional initiative and promoting leadership of women researchers and professionals in this sector.” Watch the video Closing the STEM gender gap: Training women in Earth observation and geospatial information technology to learn more about this activity.


SERVIR Southeast Asia

SERVIR Southeast Asia posted a feature celebrating the work of Dr. Nion Sirimongkonlertkul from Rajamangala University of Technology, Thailand. Dr. Nion used data from the SERVIR Mekong Air Quality Explorer tool to develop the Burn Check App for local community members. The App was awarded Thailand’s National Innovation Award. The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) which implements SERVIR Southeast Asia also hosted a Climate Talks roundtable on women in climate change.

SERVIR West Africa

Members of the Network of Women in Science and Technology of Niger (RFSTN) 

SERVIR West Africa is working to encourage more girls and women in Niger to pursue Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) fields for a more fair and prosperous society. A new news feature highlights the partnership with the Niger Network of Women in Science and Technology (RFSTN) to promote gender equality where girls in the West African nation have low school enrollment rates and are vastly underrepresented in scientific fields.

Africa Flores, a geospatial technology specialist and researcher with the NASA Science Coordination Office, was one of three women in science featured in a story in Spanish by National Geographic Latin America “International Women's Day: 3 Latin American women who leave their mark on science.
