Earth observation (EO) applications for monitoring, diagnosing, and predicting Earth system processes are becoming increasingly practical and accessible—largely due to transformations in both the amount of available data and the capability to analyze it. However, the benefits of more accessible EO have predominantly been concentrated in more industrialized parts of the world.  A new, freely-available e-book, ‘Use of Earth Observations for Actionable Decision Making in the Developing World’, has been published by Frontiers—an open-access publisher of research articles and journals.  Articles in the e-book focus on EO applications and results for sustainable development and environmental risk reduction that were developed and applied to benefit populations in vulnerable regions. Barriers and opportunities for EO technology transfer and capacity building are also explored.

The editors for the publication are SERVIR Applied Sciences Team Principal Investigator (PI) Niall Hanan (New Mexico State University), SERVIR Chief Scientist Ashutosh Limaye, and SERVIR Global Program Manager Dan Irwin (both from the NASA SERVIR Science Coordination Office). The e-book, as well as individual articles, are available for download on the Research Topic homepage, with the included 17 articles directly connected to services and applications co-developed at SERVIR’s regional hubs.
